Simple Habits to Keep your Computer Running Smoothly

"Can you please Restart your Computer"

How many times do we hear that when we call technical support of any kind?
But surprisingly, it does really help!
In this article, you will find first the reasons for restarting regularly and how to keep Windows up to date, and why it is important.

Why is it important to restart the computer?

From Security Professionals to IT experts, everyone agrees on the importance of restarting (aka rebooting) your computer and keeping it up to date.
Some will advise a restart every week, some every day. This can be a task done by the Night Audit.

In this article, an IT company explains all the different reasons why it is important to restart regularly:
- Flushes the memory: A lot of processes that your computer may have needed during the day could still be running in the background;
- Halts Memory Leaks: A program that may not have closed correctly but does not show as still open;
- Corrects Softwares Glitches: Links or functions that do not work as they should;
- Can solve Internet and Bluetooth Connection issues;
- Speeds up Performance;
- Saves you Time, in the long run;
- Fixes Emergency Issues: If a restart is required and is not done, it can cause bigger issues. It will also ensure that software updates are applied properly;

How do you know for how long the computer has been up?

1- Do a right-click in the taskbar, and click on Task Manager.
2- Once open, click on Performance, second tab.
3- At the bottom, you will see the up-time.

In this example, the computer has been up for more than 7 days... it is time for a reboot!

Why is it important to update the computer regularly?

Any Security Experts will remind you that keeping Windows and any software up to date is important.
Norton and McAfee are giving you the reasons:

How to Find and Run Windows Updates

Go to the Start Menu and type Updates on your keyboard. If you have the Search bar next to the Start menu, you can type directly in it;
In the Best Match, you will have Check for Updates. Click on it.

Whether you have a message with updates requires or not, make sure you click on Check for Updates.
It will make sure that you have all updates available to download and install.
Restart your computer when you can and check again that no new updates are available.

For our Desktop Users, if you are updating the Main Server, remember that restarting the computer will shut down Visual Matrix on any other client computer you are logged into.

A little extra tip!

Sometimes, updates are already installed, and restarting is the last step that needs to be completed.
One way to see that is to look into the taskbar.
If you see the screen icon with an orange or red dot, your computer needs a restart.

If you move the restart too much, Windows may push the restart and do it when you less expect it...
