Install Visual Matrix Desktop on a Client computer (Desktop)

Install Visual Matrix Desktop on a Client computer (Desktop)

Installing a software program is fairly simple: you double click on a file called an executable (.exe) and the install processes by itself.
However, Visual Matrix has two types of programs:
- the Server version: the program will install the software and everything needed to run the database and the interfaces. The Server is also the computer where the database is stored.
- the Client version: this machine will only store the software. It means installing a software that stores no data. All the data used by the Client is coming from and going to the Server.
This article is the process on how to install the Client version of Visual Matrix in 6 steps.
Before clicking on the Visual Matrix executable, there are couple steps to complete.
If you are replacing a computer that will still be used for other purpuses, make sure you uninstall Visual Matrix to avoid conflict of licences.

1. Make sure your computer runs on Windows10 and is up to date

Make sure the computer is on Windows10
Visual Matrix can only be installed on a Windows version starting at Windows10.
Open the File Explorer and right-click on "This PC" and go to "Properties". Confirm that you are running on Windows 10.

Make sure Windows10 is up to date
Especially any Windows security update. Even if it says "You're up to date", make sure you double check by clicking "Check for update".
In Windows search field, type Updates and choose Check for updates.

2. Disable User Account Control (UAC)

To make sure Visual Matrix has all the authorization to communicate freely with Windows services and the Server computer, UAC has to be disabled.
- Click the Start menu. In the search field type UAC.
- Click "Change User Account Control settings".
- In the window that comes up, move the slider down to "Never Notify."
- Click OK and then restart the computer.

3. Get the name of the Server computer

To communicate with your Server computer, Visual Matrix will search on your network by the name of the computer.
Log into your Server computer and write down its name (aka Device Name), we will need it in the next step as well as for the last step of the install.

4. Browse between the Client computer and the Server computer

To make sure that this new computer will communicate correctly with Visual Matrix on the Server, it is important to make sure that we can browse from and to it.
- Try to browse from the client computer to the server computer using the server computer name.
- Try to browse from the server computer to the client computer using the client computer name.
If you encounter any issue, contact your IT support. The issue can be as easy as your firewall or antivirus on any of the two computers.

5. Install Visual Matrix

Download Visual Matrix. The file will be in your download folder.
Transfer the file to the Desktop.
Run the program as Admin to install Visual Matrix (click right and choose Run as Administrator).
Complete the install by entering the Server's computer's name when prompted (ref step #3).

6. Launch Visual Matrix

Launch Visual Matrix and log in.
The first time Visual Matrix opens, it will perform an update to make sure the version matches with the Server computer.
You can now delete the install file.
If you encounter any issue, open a ticket with our Client Experience Team.
